It is not too hard to do. First catch the fish and try to keep it calm. Gently hold it upside down. Near the pelvic fins there will be two openings weareinterested in the one closest to the tail females will have then opening at least twice the size of the other and it will be round or "u" shaped .this is easier as the fish get larger and much easier if she has laid eggs before. Males will have a more "v" shaped opening just a litte larger than the other opening. Do some research to see what it should look like on your peacock. This is a young male frontosa.

Venting is a learned skill and even then you can be wrong. After awhile you get a feel for it and it is easier. I will fish a female out and post pics later, the peacocks smaller size may requires magnifier.....jewelry loupes work well. Good. Luck.

Dang that OB is a beast. A fish like that, and I'd be scared to grab it with my hands. I had to try and grab my arowana when I got rid of it, and boy was that scary. Those huge sharp fins, and huge mouth. He was a pain to handle.

Thanks for the info on venting Basset. I had no idea you could even do that. Will have to try that once my fish get a little bigger.

I love cars/driving- I have a 2005 VW golf TDI- 40mpg in town, even while burning gassers =D (talk cars with me)

This is a female frontosa vent area notice the difference. This fish has spawned so the difference is quite clear.
Female

Male
