If I get a male and female jewel cichlid, will they readily breed like convicts or they might not get along like oscars ?

like convicts (or oscars), if they are a pair they will breed, if they are not a pair, they will murder each other if there isn't space to run. Get six, give them enough space and hiding, wait for a pair to form, rehome the rest. They're somewhere between convict and other large central American cichlids in temperament.

i would go with what nina suggested and get 6 to see which pairs off .. and see if your LFS will take them back for credit

Getting six is out of question, the shop where I saw the jewels doesn't take back fish

At minimum get three and give the odd one away if you have to. But it is best to give the fish choices in making pairs, 6 is a good number. do what you think best.

I am a little confused, some say breeding jewels should be left alone in their tank since they become very aggressive and kill their tankmates, others say they need a third fish or they will eat their fry.
I have a rainbow shark should I put him with them ?
