Pietrvds created the topic: help wanted stocking a Rio 180

hello, i recently renewed my Rio 180 and i'm looking into african cichlids to stock it.
I have no experience at all with african cichlids so all help is more than welcome.

I think those little snail cichlids(lamprologus meleagris) could be something fun and maybe a couple of Altolamprologus calvus?

anyway i could use some advice! :)

tank info:

Rio 180
180 liter - 47 Us gallon
size 101 x 41 x 50 cm - 39 x 16 x 19 inches
filter JBL e900 + 200watt heater

below is a small tank blog...

Removed the internal filter because with no plants it's even more annoying :)

filter now is a JBL e900 + 200watt heater

added a bit of height difference and added some security ;)

this is how it looks now:

from the kitchen

from the living room

the cave ;)

rocks

led nightlight

waterparameters will be:

Ph tussen 7,5 - 8 , Gh tussen 11-16

i live in Belgium.... :)

i was thinking a small group of shell dwellers
Lamprologus similis (3-4cm) 2 men, 4 females

+
Julidochromis transcriptus (5-7cm) 1 man + 1 female

and if possible a solitary Altolamprologus calvus Black

think this is possible or a better solution?

To do this you need to put the rocks and caves at each end and the Shellie's in the middle. At least 2-3 shells per also the calvus really like shells but need bigger ones than the Shellies. The Julie's can be pretty aggressive and may pick on the shell dwellers if so just leave some open sand around the shells so the Julie's do not claim the territory good luck with them, too bad you are so far I have some awesome calvus and Julie's as well. I do not currently raise shellies.2-3 calvus would be better

I don't want to change much to the setting because of the foam and i just like it like this.
Just want to add shells for the dwellers and the Julie's are just an option i had in mind but i want a nice stocking with no bullies ;)

could you give me some examples i could house in this setting except adding of shells but nothing more?

;)

i took a picture from above to show how the stones are placed, left and right are 2 caves for hiding, i thought of placing small groups of shells throughout the tank.

would really love some more advice, i think i will stick with a small group of Similis but i cant make up what to add then?

would love a couple or a solitary tanganyikan cichlid :)

The Shellies want open sand for the shell bed to feel at home. your best bet as it is would a straight Calvus or comp tank. any of the rock dwellers will want smaller rocks with more crevices.as is all the species will try to live in the shells. the julies would eliminate the shellies. but you could get several kinds of calvus and comps to put in a it is.from the pics it looks like the caves are too big. all these fish like to wedge into cracks and crevices.
