Chris-gashead created the topic: Sexing Kribs

Just wondered if you guys could help with sexing these. I am pretty sure it is a male and female, but just wanted to check with those of you who have more experience with them....

Thanks,
Chris

Sexing

The male is larger with a more slim line body while the female has a rounded brightly colored belly and rounded dorsal fin.

So I take it you are agreeing that I have a male and female? :)

I agree with you … wish I could see the bottom fin of the male or his dorsal fin extended but I go with m and fm

I'll see Darth's 110% and raise another 110. I have several and those are them. If your trying to breed, or want lots of fry you should have a 3 female to 1 male ratio

Many thanks for you replies guys! Thats good news. I am not desperate to breed them or anything. I have them in a community tank with lots of cardinal and neon tetras, 4 Yoyos, 1 tiger plec, 1 bristle nose plec, 2 Rams and 2 Steel Blue's so I expect it is too busy for anything to survive?

Kribs like caves for spawning, like a flowerpot set up w/ the opening face down & a small hole cut into the side, so there is a chance that a few might make it(& they will defend their brood vigorously!!), but you probably will need another female(they are polygamous harem spawners)......but those loaches will make short work of the fry if they can.

The loaches are kept on their toes already as it is :)

I have 2 half coconut shells at the moment, with only one entrance though. However, one of the shells does have a small hole in the roof of the shell, which may come in handy should they ever spawn. I do not intend to keep the fry alive to be honest (as harsh as that sounds) I only want them to do what is natural and see what happens, but I don’t really have the room to accommodate more, and would therefore need to give them away to a LFS or advertise online or something.

The Kribs spend most of the time underneath my main centrepiece, a large piece of bogwood, so I imagine they would probably not use the coconuts at all. It is my fear that they spawn under the bogwood, and make life a living hell for everything else. I want to try and push them into the corners of the tank if possible to allow at least half the tank for everything else lol
