As far as species go I know I have the venustus, dubois, and I have 2 socolofi. Anything else is assorted. One used to be yellow and is now blue with a yellow dot on its anal fin. Weirdest thing I ever saw

I would guesstimate that's an egg spot on some sort of Mbuna.......pics would be helpful.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

Here's your pic Darth. The 1st is when I bought him and the bottom is from today. See that yellow dot at his anal fin? He's also grown 3x faster than my other ones.

Yup, assorted....I/E hybrids......I could be wrong, been decades since I've kept them. That's an egg spot, usually an indicator of male/female, males MAY get more than one, but not always, females one to none.

I'm guessing it's a female. Sucker is a bitch. It chases every other fish in the tank even the ones that are bigger than it. I think it's extremely cool how she changed from yellow to blue but she might be finding a new home. I know Africans are territorial but she's taking it to new extremes!

Malawi tanks MUST be heavily stocked IME otherwise the aggression is just too much. I had mine in a 55G for a while before upgrading to a 125 and there is just nowhere for other fish to run in a 55 when they get upset or have a funny five minutes. I would suggest getting the Venustus out of that tank though as they do grow large and are fairly aggressive. They are big swimmers as well and dart from one side to the other in no time so a 55 seems a tad small, just my opinion.

I would suggest 15-18 small to medium sized Malawi mbuna in a 55 is about right. Large water changes twice a week and strong filtration are obviously required.

I'm actually glad you sent this. I have 16 Malawi right now, do WC ' 3 times a week. But my husband and I have decided to upgrade. Mostly because of my venustus. We'll be getting a 180 or 200 gallon very soon.

Good size tank that. Opens your options for other larger fish too
