Big-Ken created the topic: apistogramma bitaeniata Río Tigre

Picked up 4 last night from a guy in my club, there only about 1" but the males color is starting to come in on his face. They share the tank with 9 wild caught nannostomus eques (diptail pencil fish)

Ya I got pretty lucky with these guys, the Rio Tigre variation isnt very common in the hobby. These are f2's the guy i got them from got his f1's from Mike Wise when he came to town to give a talk on apistos and brought some fry from his WC pair that he collected himself. I guess to get to the collection point you have to take a 1 day boat ride up the river then a half day hike through the jungle.

Heres a shot of my buddies male in breeding dress

That's absolutely freakin' awesome, BK. :woohoo: Seriously looks like a Blackwater biotope. How many females(aren't they harem breeders?)....I used to keep Agazizi's in my 30 & I had some Cacatuoides in a 29......did daily WC's w/ RO water mixed w/ p Fluval peat pellets....they bred like crazy.....what PH & KH is that water now?

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

Thanks Jack B) yes they are harem breeders, i was going to get 6 but he could only get 4 out so hopefully i have a couple of females in there luckily he's only across town if i need more

This is a true Río Tigre biotope with the exception that the wood is from the lake of the Ozarks, the leaves are oak, the sand is silica pool filter sand but still the right material, and if your splitting hairs the tds and gh is too high but other than those its correct. I did a TON of research to find the right dither fish (nanno eques) that actually come from those waters and to get the right look.

My tank:
Temp: 76°
pH: 5.6
Gh: 3°
Kh: <1°
TDS: 231ppm

Wild:
Temp: 76°-78°
pH: 5.4
Gh: -
Kh: -
TDS: 28ppm

Nice fish Ken, and I love the tank. How often do you have to change the leaves out? What kind of filters are those you are using?
