Brooksie created the topic: Mixing babies??

Sorry all... I'm still alive but have been very busy.

My Red Zebra babies are about 9 weeks old. Their mother is preggers again!! Once the babies have hatched, can I put them in the 20 gallon tank with the 9 week old babies? Do I need a divider?

Thanks... tomorrow, I'll come online and read some more and post some responses! Sorry for being gone!!

They should be just fine mixing them together, soon you will be over-run with little Mbunas.

I would try it... It worked for me, but there may be some aggression...

Will do! Momma is still holding on to them right now. After she drops them, I'll keep them for about a week or two in the net then move them over.

im still raising my RZ fry. they are about 10-12 weeks now. i would NOT put new RZ fry with them, i tried it with new auratus and very quickly put them back in the net. bearing in mind auratus fry are bigger and faster and some still got eaten.
personally, id get them bigger and stronger in a breeder net for at least 3 weeks, even then there is still a big risk. or save the problem and put a divider.
congrats, it so rewarding to have fry around and ur very lucky with mama xx

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to keep them in the net for a few weeks. They would be in with other RZ babies. The current babies are about 1" long. Still waiting for mom to drop the next batch.

I can't believe I'm finally having babies!! Those of you that have been faithful Brooksie followers know my history!

I have just been leaving the fry in the big tank till about an inch and sell the survivors,( at least the ones of known parentage)I still only loose a few from the batches, any hybrids or just plain excess fry go in with the fronts for lunch time.

The problem with the Mbuna is they are very prolific in their breeding. The shear volume of fry can be staggering. I have six females holding now 20-30 fry in a batch, call it 100 more fry in the next 2 weeks...and the little boogers are very hard to catch. The Frontosas can only eat so many....maybe I'll salt them like anchovies.

I don't know how many she is holding this time. Last time it was 25... I have 21 left. At least I think that is how many, the damn things don't hold still for me to count them!! I can't leave them in the big tank and watch them get eaten... :( Funny that I can feed my Oscar gold fish though huh?
