Helllllllo.

I have about 20 africans in my 4ft tank, though the biggest is probs 14cm, and they ALWAYS hide. I got told that if you put more rocks and hidey holes in the tank it will make them happy though it only makes them hide more.

Also If I put more in there, will they come out more? and etc?

Most of them are hybrids and they are VERY pretty. Espeacily when Electric Yellow and Blue mate! :) Yellow and Blue striped! :)

Any ideas what I could do?

I can get a picture if you need one.

What are your temp and PH? Mbuna should be active to the point of frenzy most of the time.

check your ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels. something isnt right.

for ph - your looking around 8.0 but fish can adjust to just about any ph as long as its consistent and not absurdly high or low.

temperature 76 - 80 give or take a few degrees

also make sure u remove excess food. you probably have some laying around if they arent active like u say. that will surely raise ammonia levels.

i dont think adding would solve any problems. in fact it will probably add to your problems if ur water parameters arent right. i think 20 is just about the right number for ur tank anyways.

Well as a sad fact to add, I had to add 3 of my silver dollas into the tank but my africans love them and because of that they are coming out more.
I cleaned the tank and there was barely any dirt when i vaccumed the floor.

Just because the tank isn't dirty doesn't mean your water parameters are correct. Also do water changes once a week. Idk how I feel about Africans and silver dollars.....

Honestly I think they are more active because u cleaned the tank and your water quality is slightly better. Remember with 20 fish in a 55 gallon you are over stocked ( as you should be with Africans) so that means you need excellent filtration and frequent water changes.

I dont think I mentioned this before, but I clean the tank every wednesday afternoon.

They still dont come out ^

Maybe I should look into BETTER testing gear

Also to add in, watching my fish last night to see all the Afrcians come out and swim with the Silver Dollas.
