Really is up to personal choice. Make sure your rocks and caves are stable as the little buggers dig like a backhoe.

If you go with the sand I recommend the "caribsea aragmax" do not bother with the live versions. It is not sharp and will not bother the gills. Unless you really like the look or get some sand sifters avoid the "sugar size" it is really fine and a bit of a pain but looks incredible and fish love it. The regular grain size is ok for Mbunas or general use.

I use sand as well, gravel just does not "do it" for me in most setups.

Definitely sand. They'll dig up gravel too, but with sand it's something else. Pool filter sand works just spectacularly. I have play sand right now, and that seems to be working well too (really well - it's much finer so it sprays up spectacularly when they dig or fight - I'm loving it). There is some concern that pool filter sand is a bit sharp, and harms their lips when digging, but this is not a problem in my experience.
