They are best in groups of at least 2 males and 4-6 females. They must have very fine sand that is not sharp....I use caribsea Arag-max oolite sand the grains are rounded and very small, be sure to rinse for and endless time and have cloudy water for a couple days but looks great after. They are a mouth brooder 10-20 fry in a brood. Males are stunningly colorful females less so. The males dig large pits with surrounding hills in multiple concentric rings. They are non aggressive and are good tank mates for most tanganyikans that will not eat them. A 55 would be ok for a group. Multiple males ensure continuous displays and full color. Cyprichromis calvus comps and julidochromis are great tank mates. They continuously sift the sand for food often moving the entire tank floor in a day....one day hills the next flattened. A really good tank top is a must as they jump like rockets through any opening , use caution during tank maintenance. They cost 15 each or trios for 40. High ph 7.5-8.3 will give best breeding and color and they do not like ph drops at all, you can raise it quickly if you want but they will die if ph drop more than .2 in several days. I recommend Seachen tangayika buffer and rift lake salts for easy care and stable ph...the oolite sand helps as well. Did I cover it all?
