In reality only the Kigomas are "real" frontosa, all the others are Giberosa. the kigs were the original specie described. the structure of the lake shore causes isolated groups which result in the different varieties we see today. the populations do not as a general rule mix because the open lake is fairly empty of life and very very deep(over a mile) most of the life is in the bays, each large bay having its own distinct coloration. which is why knowing the collection point becomes important. the more widely separated the bays are the more different in appearance the fish become.hence northern Kigomas and southern bismarks look quite different.it also explains the huge numbers of different cichlids in the lake.

Bismark Giberosa.

Kigoma frontosa..

yes he was suggesting getting rid of the giberosa title and making it all frontosa ! only making collection site the important part in distinguishing between the two (or more) variants ..

I am partial to this over the different species

he has been studying them since b4 I was born so he has his right to his theory .. I mean hell the guy named and Renamed most of the fish in the rift lakes!

Phd. Tolber also talked about in SA how different species literally look different in different parts of the river (slow , fast , predators, prey ) but they are EXACTLY the same species and if fry from one area are raised in another they will not look like the parents but like the fish where they live!!!

most people refer to all as frontosa anyway so it makes sense.
