Capt Dave created the topic: Purple algae

What is best way to get it to colonize? I have live rock with some on it but it don't wanna spread. I tried chipping pieces off and letting it settle in different parts of tank but no go. I have a feeling this type of bacteria may be calcium dependent. Should I be adding calcium supplements or invest in a reactor?

I have no idea why the water bill is so high

If it is hard it is coralline algae which is good and you dont need to get rid of it. If it is soft, it is cyano and that isn't so good. water changes and vacuuming out what you can with each water change, along with cutting back on feeding is the best defense for cyanobacteria. Ensure your Nitrates are low as well and protein in the water can cause this.
