Luscar created the topic: 20 gallon clownfish tank???

So I have a spare 20 gallon tank sitting around and last night I got the idea that maybe I could keep 2 (or 1) clownfish in it. I did some digging around and found out that it was possible to keep a clownfish in a 20 gallon.

anyone with experience with marine tanks have any tips? like what kind of rock and sand I need to maintain this. I already have a powerhead that I can use as a wave maker.

20 gallons would be perfect for 2 clowns what kind are you thinking about?

Marine tanks seem alot harder then they realy are.

you're gona need live rock a pound per gallon is recomended, as far as filtration goes you can get away with an strong HOB. It would be nice to have a protein skimmer but you dont have to have one.

lighting and the powerhead arent nesesary unless you're gona get an anenome or some coral.

I think just Ocellaris clownfish. I don't plan on having any corals or fancy stuff like that (on a really right budget).

Do you have any HOBs in mind? what about sand?

IMO you can't go wring with an aqua clear. You want a filter that would be rated for a bigger a tank.

Just rinse the sand through like you would do in a fresh water tank

in a 20 gallon I would do ether percs, occelaris, or skunks.

-keep in mind salt is gone run you 15-25 bucks for 50 gallons worth which is gona end up costing you. but luckily you do much less water changes in SW systems. ppl do 25 percent changes a month I do 10 percent a week.

It's interesting because I always thought saltwater tanks would require more water changes. which is the reason why I went for freshwater

So I need 50 gallons worth of sand?

Also, if I get live sand and rinse it would that kill the bacteria (or whatever organism is in it that would help cycle the tank)?

THANK YOU!!!! :woohoo:

Great topic, I have a 20gal about to be free. What is the reason for the reduced WC schedule?

I think the reduced water change schedule is because in a marine aquarium you have a full ecosystem, I was thinking of doing this but I though that hob's on marine systems were nitrate factories? Also could the natural filtration be achieved through a single powerhead? Meaning just live rock and sand and the powerhead?

Ben ( benmcfadden ) would be a great person for you to send a PM to. He just recently set up his own tank and will have tons of info for you.

Luscar, you dont need 50 lbs of live sand! reg sand will eventually become live, and you'll need anywhere from 10-20 lbs of reg sand.

Willy G- in a small nano system strong HOB's are great. My 30 gallon has been running for months with perfect nitates and for filtration I use an aqua clear 50 and 20.

An inch of sand will be enough.

Just make sure you have maybe 5 snails and 5 crabs to turn the sand over. Maybe even a starfish.

Haku, I knew your were good.
