jewie created the topic: do bristlenoses get whitespot?

ok so i have had an outbreak of whitespot in my tank which i think may have been from my new silver dollars (which i have now lost..) and im hoping it doesnt kill my albino bristlenoses. they are behaving wierd, all suctioning to the tank and shooting up to the top every now and then... i have a pic of one, could i please have opinions as to weather it has whitespot aswell?..

im pretty sure my jack dempseys have it aswell as they have stopped feeding and are rubbing against the driftwood.

i have used a dissolvable treatment, turned the heater up to 30 degrees celcius and added a bit of salt but should i use salt?

any help is much appreciated!!

Looks like ich to me! Dont get meds, the folks on the site will tell you what to set your heater to...you can kill the parasite with heat that your fish can tolerate, I just dont remember what.....

Tank temp to 86F... Leave it there for 10 days AFTER the spots are gone..
Make sure to vacuum the gravel several times, and really well to get any that is in the gravel!

don't be tempted to get medicine against the ick.
Your pleco's handle medz very poorly.
Just raise the temp by 2o a day, keep to Nicki's advice, you'll be fine.

I am not familiar with the heat tolerance of those breeds, but you can pretty easy find that info on the net. I think the thing is meds are a slippery slope - they mess with your bio filter and water quality and the only time I ever used whitespot meds on goldfish I ended up losing fish that were never infected with ich but couldnt tolerate the crappy water. Fish are probably better suited to managing temp changes than meds.

Remember that heat messes with your oxygen saturation in the water so turn your airstones up to max or put extra ones in....
Watch your water parameters and good luck...
