My little Tigger has been swimming in a downward spiral motion all day now. And every now and than he will finally swim forward. I assumed he was happy to be out of the small 10 gallon he shared in Petco with 5 other fish. He kind of rubs against ornaments in his tank and I'm starting to think it's ick but I can't tell because he's an albino tiger oscar. I don't have a PH water testing kit or any KIND of testing kit. I can't get one for a while, but I am doing %50 water changes every day because I was informed that my 55 gallon tank wasn't actually cycled correctly.. But can anyone tell me how Oscars, at each age, are suppose to behave? It's also day 3 and he still hasn't eaten, but has been picking stuff off the bottom searching through sand.

It's important that you get yourself a water testing kit ASAP.It's really difficult to say what could be wrong with the Oscar. However, worse scenario is that the fish has some kind of swim bladder disorder, this could account for its strange swimming pattern. I'm afraid is not very much that can be done for these type of illnesses. Just play it by ear see what the fish was like in the next few days.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

I got a kit and the KH and GH were too low, so I did a water change and added some PH regulation stuff and hes still swimming weird :( He isn't staying in a corner of the tank though, he's swimming a TON around the tank, but he was laying on the bottom of the tank where I bought him so I have no idea. I'll check the PH again tomorrow but if he doesn't improve, I'll probably take him back to petco. Even though I HATE doing that to my fish friends </3

when your water is in good condition... oscar .. whether big or small behave just the same..
i have a 14" adult oscar and a 4" juvy, they just act and swim the same

if your small guy swim differently, better observe further, perhaps it has some issue that
requires special attention.

The problem is, this is the first oscar I've ever owned.. lol I have no idea how they're suppose to act. Or even swim. At first I thought he was being silly but now I'm a little concerned.

You say you tested kh, gh, and ph, then added some stuff to try and regulate the ph. Trying to change ph is not good with chemicals. As long as it's steady a oscar should be fine in a wide range of ph.

You need to test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. That will tell you if your cycled, and could help explain why he's behaving the way he is.

Since you have a petco nearby, can they test the water for you?

Yes they can. The aquatic specialist said he could test a sample of the water for me in a week. It was because I brought Tigger back in because he passed away suddenly this morning. He gave me store credit to get a new fish, only if I bring in a water sample from my tank so he can make sure it's safe to put an oscar in. I guess I didn't properly cycle the tank. :/
