daniellesmith created the topic: Sick Oscar

Hi All,

I have 2 oscars that I bought together a few months ago. One has grown massively and is very happy and healthy (eating everything in its path).

The other is tiny, wont eat, doesn't swim and seems very ill. She has loads of scales falling off and her fins are now dropping out too. I tried separating her from the other fish (into a very large plastic container in the tank) and gave her some stuff to heal her scales but it didn't seem to be working after 3 applications. Then she ended up jumping out of the container and back into the tank with the rest of the fish. She is always swimming on her side very slowly and always in the back corner.

It's hard to tell if the big one is bullying her. They spend most of their time cuddled next to each other sleeping and then some days he'll just ram into her side hard. When she was in the separate container, he wouldn't sleep on the bottom, he was always around the container like he was pining for her.

I'm so at a loss. All the other fish are happy and healthy. I have checked all the water levels with the aquarium and they said it's fine. Temp is 26, filtration is clean, I clean the tank weekly (so much poo!).

Any suggestions or should I euthanize her?

Thanks

there are times fish is sick before time and does not recuperate no matter what we do.
as long as you have the healthy one, you have two options, keep the sick one at the
hospital tank or euthanizing it to stop the suffering. i know it is difficult but sometimes
it is the best thing to do...

can you post a picture.

It sounds as if this Oscar is just the runt of the litter (so to speak). If all your other fish are perfectly fine and showing no signs of ill-health then maybe euthanasia would be the kindest way out for this poor little fish.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)
