Do you guys think for a 75 gallon aquarium with one oscar I should run a Filstar XPL or a Ehiem 2217 to accompany my HOB?

Also, what kind of biological media do you guys run in your canister filters?

Thanks!

I just ordered an eheim classic 600 (2217) for my 125gal. I already have an eheim classic 250, marineland 80gal filter, and aqueon 40gal.

That's a lot of filters on one tank! I think I'm going to buy a Ehiem 2217 also.

I use mainly Seachem Matrix in all my filters.

I run about a dozen Filstars here, some the original Rena and some the newer API. I have had zero issues with any, and a couple are 10yrs. I highly recommend them. Owners of the 2217 claim the same reliability and efficiency. You cant go wrong with either. The Filstar xpxl is in most areas about $40 more than the 3 tray xpl. A good option and would leave you in good standing should you someday get a larger tank. I cant claim this for certain, but I am FAIRLY sure the XPL holds more media than the Eheim. I use mostly Fluval Biomax, but also have some Matrix in a couple filters.

Does this look like the beginning of HITH?

Or simply just a ding on his head?

Not sure what you are referring to? I see a possible dent back further, sort of inline with the pec fin. Thats nothing. Another possible mark to the right of his left eye? Again nothing, most likely a dent from banging something. Both should disappear day or two. Hith generally shows slowly with erosion around the nostrils and sensory pits. I see neither on your fish.

Yes the dent in line with the pectoral fins. Glad that's nothing, he must have bumped it on something. I figured the one by his eye was just a mark from hitting something also. I also wondered because sometimes here lately he hasn't been eating all of his food. Water parameters are very clean and temp is normal. Normally he would eat every pellet I put in there and now sometimes he will only eat a few and leave the rest. Is this normal behavior?
