vogey created the topic: Spots on Oscar not going away

I was able to borrow a camera and get a few pics of my Oscar he has white spots on his face and eye, they seemed to be going away (thought they were injuries from him being reckless though I never see him slam into anything) but now seem worse and a small spot starting on his other eye, is this a fungus infection? sorry pics aintthe best

the picture shows your fish is already having HITH....
it has something to do with water quality and did not happen overnight...
you need to check water quality as to: ammonia; nitrite; nitrate; pH; and temp...
for now, I suggest do large water change ...

He has had white spot for a while, was going away. I thought hith would make holes? What else can I do to treat him? I'll do a %75 change tonight, ordering a Python today as well, do they work as slick as advertised?

Dont pull him out of the tank, the stress will be too much. The Python, imo, is an absolute necessity for cichlid keepers. Quick and easy drain/fill and it does a superb job of substrate vac. You gravel may be holding a lot of waste, contributing to decaying water quality. Large volume water changes, if not every day, at least every 2nd until you see some progress. There may be a bacterial or fungal infection setting in, but you cant address that without clean water. Meds are rendered useless in iffy water. Lets clean it up very well, take it from there.

You may be quite surprised at what accumulates in 3 weeks. I pull waste from substrate every water change and thats 4-5 days Python can be extended with hardware store tubing. Make it as long as you need. I've added twice to my 25ft. It might be a 50 by now!

My nitrate (the bigger num one] is high between 20 n 40 the nitrite is betwen 1 n 3 i haven't figured out how the ammonia (cant spell) test works yet but my gen hardness is off the scale and it seems my ph is up around 9. Ive run outta start rite (the chlorine remover tap water safe stuff) should i still do the water change tonight? Also the guy at petco recommended a all herbal parasite treatment (witch i happen to have had from bulk fish supply buys)
