sammie created the topic: Water change

Hello,

I have one oscar in a 75 gallon tank, I have been doing about a 75% water change once a week. Are big water changes good for oscars? I tried doing big water changes in a smaller tank with some angel fish and I believe it stressed them out so bad they got sick. I just don't want the same to happen to my oscar. Advice would be appreciated!

Large water changes can negatively affect fish that have been in poor water for a long time. The clean water shocks them. Cichlids that have been properly cared for can, and will thrive with as much as you can throw at them. Depending on the size of your Oscar, it may be a very good idea to add another change. At 75% weekly your fish should be in good standing, and more clean water will be a benefit. You could likely do every day if you want.

Great. Thanks for the advice. It made me wonder because when I check the ph in my tank it is always different than the tap so idk if my big water changes would shock him for that reason.
