Kyle87 created the topic: Tiger Oscar FACE WART

my tiger oscar has what I am calling a wart on the side of his face, the wart has now grown a puss balloon off the wart. Mildly freaked out. The only thing out of the norm I have done recently is feed him a grasshopper about 2 months ago.

Oscar is 12" and 4 years old. I have a picture but I can't seem to figure out how to upload it, sorry new to the forum.

hi there, photo is obviously needed to determine exactly what this could be. Oscars often develop a wart, but normally on the lower lip.

If you go to a website called www.photobucket.com then you can upload your photos completely free of charge. You can then use a small piece of code which will show the photo in your forum post.

it may be worth noting that he has become very aggressive to the point where I had to remove his fellow Oscar tank mate as I feared for its life.

I don't necessarily think this growth has anything to do with the aggression, that's just the temperament of the Oscar itself. To be honest with you, the only way you're going to find out if this growth is anything nasty is to get it analysed. It could be benign, could be cancerous. I'm certainly not in the position to say what it is. If it was me, I would just monitor the situation for a while and see how the growth develops. I had an Oscar a few years ago that developed a slight lump just inside its bottom lip. Unfortunately it was obviously some kind of nasty growth which continued to grow until the fish couldn't eat. I suppose there are veterinarians around that could have operated on the fish, but they are hard to find. Plus you are talking about how much an operation other fish would cost. I would guess that anyone specialising in this type of procedure would be charging a fair old whack. Unless you are dealing with fish that costs a lot of money then it's a case of whether you do it because you want to save the fish, or because you can afford it.

It's up to you which way want to go. You could ask your veterinarian if he could test a sample of the growth. He should then be able to tell you for sure what the situation is. If it's cancerous, then I would euthanise the fish. If it's not, then you got to obviously think about where you go from there.

Hope that helps

i am not sure but it looks like a worm hole (anchor worm) where the worm has gotten out. just watch over it... apply some rock salt to expedite healing (1tbs:10gal ratio)

What is considered the preferred way to euthanize a fish? I have never had to do it.

I used clove oil on one of my barbs last month-it works like an overdose of anesthetic-seemed pretty peaceful to me.
