H i everyone i hope you can help me .I brought a tiger oscar about two weeks ago everything was fine eating and doing what a oscar should. Now he has lost his appetite very sluggish and constantly releasing white stringy faeces .H e is housed in a 200 litre tank because is is a baby at the moment.Tank mates are three yoyoloaches three corys and a golden nuggat pleco, water changes are done every week , temp is 24c water test s done every week :nitrate level 40, nitrite level 0 ph 7 . I Haved upped the temp by a couple of degrees to see if this helps, the tank has been running for about a year and have had no problems before with fish being sick. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Welcome to our little community.

Was the tank cycled before you put the fish in? Have you tested for ammonia?

Exactly what have you been feeding your fish?

Is there any swelling in the abdomen area? Also, you say the fish has completely stopped eating?

Would it be possible for you to take a photo of what is coming out of the fish? Not sure if this is a parasitic infection or not.

Does the fish look in distress at all?

40 nitrate is very high. Oscar needs to be in water of 20 or less. Closer to 10 is better. Change water to bring nitrate way down and keep it low. A parasite treatment will be in order, BUT.. water must be clean for meds to be effective. Get some Seachem Paraguard and follow instructions on the product.

Would really like a good pic or two of your Oscar. Melafix is very mild, borderline useless for most ailments. As stated, any treatment begins with very clean water. Medications, weak or strong are ineffective in poor water
