exactly an adaptation!

Don Conkel was talking about how even in his Parachromis he was finding lots of fiber in their bellies at times! Im wondering if from fish they eat or grazing in between big meals ? or maybe both?

Well that's a relief. My jag keeps trying to hoard the Emerald Entree that I am feeding my other fish. I thought he would get harmed by it.

I'm guessing the jag gets it from the fish they eat (grazers) as well as perceived food near vegetation. Their mouth doesn't strike me as a grazer like a JD or sev.

I read this thread just now. I am a newer guy here. Great site though.

But I am confused myself on pellet food.

Based on this thread, there doesnt seem to be any commercially created pellets that are good for our fish.

SO is making our own then the really only option if we want to keep our cichlids happy?

You can buy commercially made pellets, but they are not all equal. Each one has at least one issue. It all depends on what you are comfortable with.

From a pure natural diet standpoint NLS is the closest....but it has a small trace of etoxyquin which a lot of people have issues with (I think its fine in minor doses like this, but it all depends on who you talk to). Hikari Bio-gold has no etoxyquin and its nutrition list isnt the greatest, but it does have pro-biotics.

My advice use a mix of them all. I use NLS, Omega 1, and bio-gold as my pellets. Then veggies and insects on occasion throughout the week for my oscar. Don't make it too complicated any one of those 3 would be a great choice and would by far surpass what a fish would get in the wild. Water quality and tank size are mainly what usually dictate optimum health IMO.
