My 4 inch albino oscar always seems hungry and tries to eat other fish in the aquarium. I just caught him with my ghost knife fish in his mouth! Luckily he spit him out. One of my other fish has disappeared and I assume it was eaten. Why is he always hungry and how do I keep him from eating my other fish!?

Oscars will eat anything they can fit in their mouths....what size tank is it?

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

You can't fight instinct. They are opportunistic fish that will eat whenever they can. It has nothing to do with hunger.

A small tiger oscar, 2 blood red parrots, one angel, 2 convicts and of course a few of their babies, and 2 Texas cichlids. I have an eheim 2217 filter.

Ok Abby, heres whats gonna happen. 1, your tank is underfiltered. High quality filter, yes, but nowhere near the capacity for the bio and mechanical filtration you need. 2, you are, or will soon be overstocked. 3, if these Texas cichlids are H. Cyanoguttatus, they will more than likely kill everything else in your tank. Also, having a pair of breeding Convicts does not bode well for the others either. Yes they are small, but quite mean as well and could also easily kill your Oscar and Angel. Of course, nothing is guaranteed in the cichlid world, but the odds are very long for this mix to work out.

it is the nature of the oscar to eat anything that could fit in its mouth,it never matters about anything but the size ,so before having a tank mate for oscar make sure that its aggression is equal to that of the oscar and most importantly make sure that the tank mate is equal or more in size with the oscar.

Thus, keeping these factors in the mind , it would make you easier in this hobby of fish keeping of oscars.
