JBare created the topic: Are bananas ok?

Was feeding Marshall and my 2 year old comes out of nowhere and throws his banana in the tank. It lasted 10 seconds at the most. Is that ok? Can't say I've ever given a fish bananas before.

I guess it made him brave, because that's when he jumped up and bit me. Didn't hurt but freaked me out. He's so fiesty! Here's a new pic. Think he's grown a bit! Sorry for the glare, I'm not sure how to get around that..

Oscars will eat just about anything if they can get it in their mouth, so it's not a surprise that the banana got eaten straightaway. To be honest, I don't really know how good banana is as part of an Oscars diet, however I don't think it will really hurt, but I wouldn't feed it too much

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

LOL yes it's not part of his normal diet or even on the menu, I was shocked he ate it actually. . .I was reaching in to grab it out when he destroyed it. He seems to be doing ok, trying not to worry.

Lots of potassium? Oscars eat fruit that falls in the water in the wild....he'll be fine. B)

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

like said above, O's eat lots of fruit in the wild, and will like them as a treat in our tanks too.
Just my expierience, don't feed kiwifruit, for it can turn your water into a sticky goo that looks terrible.

Love this story! I told it to my four year old and he cracked up. Hope this won't encourage him to "experiment" with food in the tank without my supervision though. :)

Will definitely try some banana now.

As for the glare, if you have someone (or even the back of a chair) hold up a black cloth or something black in the place where you want to take your shot, it will significantly reduce the glare off the glass and make a nicer shot.

banana is my oscars favorite fruit been feeding it for years never had a problem but i do have to say it's really messy so cut it into really small pieces

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next
