Oscar2015, you should definitely introduce some veggies and fruit into your oscars' diet. They are not carnivores, but omnivores, and can get susceptible to bloat or other diseases if not given enough good greens, etc. Shelled peas are a good thing to try as well as zucchini, veggie discs (broken up to small pieces). Try small pieces of banana as well.

You should not be feeding them three times a day. Many people only feed them once a day from birth, but definitely no more than twice a day up until they hit about 5 or 6 inches and then only once a day, while skipping at least one day a week (starve day). Oscars will eat and eat, but they will suffer long term if over fed.

Thanks Poseidon
I am going to the store to get some chick peas and zucchini
And to the pet store for some silicon to work on a project I am doing
And to see if I can find Hikari algae staffers and veggie discs
Try those with my Oscars a nd hope for the best

@oscar2015 - I don't usually like to get off topic, but didn't you have a ten gallon filter running on your oscars tank? If that was someone else please let me know ... it's hard to keep track sometimes. I recall you had your 2 oscars in a 30 gallon with a 10 gallon filter? I had suggested a penguin 350 because of the low price? Is that correct or am I thinking of someone else?

If shipping weren't too much I'd sell you a penguin 350 for really cheap. I have 3 of them I'm not using.

For an oscar you really need double the amount of filtration, so a filter rated for 100g minimum for your 55g tank. Sponge filters connected to an air pump are the cheapest ones out there that can easily support a tank that size, and much better than a hang on back filter.

A sponge filter in addition to your current hob filter really would be the best choice for your budget.

I looked up the cheapest prices on eBay.

The whisper 40 air pump is $12.45 with free shipping - item #111225688880
The Hydro-Pro IV Sponge Filter is $9.99 with $5.99 shipping - item #161283426824

regarding to sponge filters -- you have so many options ...... DIY -> use a 3/4 pvc -> drill holes bottom 2 inches -> use filter pads wrapped and zipped tied around the pvc where the holes are drilled -> place an air stone in the middle -> BAM ---- sponge filter that will cost you < $5.
