I'm sure there is plenty to read on this same question but I have to ask anyway. I have read on numerous posts about fish being able to go weeks with no food. In a month I will be going away for week or so and I know in the past with my African tank if they didn't get fed they fought and ate the weak link. Now I have 2 juvenile Os 3 silver dollars about 4 inches and 1 six inch featherfin oh and a 2 inch clown loach I can't catch to remove hopefully by Vaca I can. So I do have a automatic feeder from my last vacation but what's the real deal. Do I need to feed them or no use the auto feed???

I was just away for more than a week and my oscars and other fish were fine. One tank has a giant danio in with a 10 inch O, a 5 inch severum and a nearly foot long pleco. All perfectly fine when I got back. What is the dynamic in your tank like? How big is your tank? (I don't remember). Will probably be fine with no food and it is good to starve your fish every so often.

i have not lost any fish for a week vacation but
lost some when i was away for a day only...
how about that... what i am trying to point out is
if you are going to lost your fish, it will happen whether you are
on vacation or not...

my point is... fish could live for a week with no foods
but having dispenser,... i 'd rather use it but set for minimal dispense

hi there

1. honest, I have not been feeding my fish whenever I go outstation or on some holidays overseas.
2. some were as long as two weeks.
3. however, my housekeeper does come in to check on the air pump, filters etc.
4. at times, perform the wc for me.
5. I would not trust the auto dispenser thing.

Oscars can go weeks without food especially during the dry season. Fishes are cold-blooded. Thus, they have a low metabolism and do not need to eat as much as a person. While some species are grazers and eat frequently, your fishes will be fine with food for a week. In fact, not feeding the fish is more beneficial than feeding the fishes especially if you can't change the water because the fish will produce less ammonia. Also hungry fish is a healthy fish unless it is too hungry that it went upside down.
