HurbanLegend created the topic: My Oscars Won't Eat.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and I hope this is the right place for this thread.

I have recently acquired 2 large Oscars (2 weeks ago) they are both near the 10.5 inch size. They show interest in food, however they do not eat it. I've tried, hikari floating sticks, hikari sinking pellets, live superworms, frozen bloodworms, frozen cooked shrimp, frozen fresh shrimp, frozen silversides. Am I missing something? Is there more foods that I can try? Maybe a food that Oscars can't resist?

My tank info:

180 Gallon BB tank with driftwood and rock
Fx6 filter and emperor bio wheel HOB

Water Parameters:

Amonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate under 20

Only the 2 Oscar's are in this tank.

Thanks everyone, any help would be much appreciated!

Hi there and welcome to our community.

Have you any idea what they were fed on before you got them? If by chance the only food they were given were live fish then this could be the reason. Ask the previous owner if you can

Thanks for the welcome/reply!

I would like to but I got them from my lfs. They were traded in and they can't remember by who... I was thinking they might have been fed live too but I'm doing my best avoiding it. I guess I should give it a try?

Welcome to OFL. Do not feed live fish, regardless if they had that before or not. At those fish's size and probable age they can easily go several weeks without food. You have a great setup and clean water for them. They will eat when they get hungry enough. Keep offering what you have, remove uneaten amounts. Oscar is top of the heap for stubborn and hunger striking. Be patient, they will come around. An otherwise healthy fish wont starve itself.

Thanks!

Yeah they are quite thick and fat atm. I'm just getting a little tired of vacuuming / netting up the food. Also I fear that I'm spooking them deeper into the hunger strike by going in there all the time. I didn't know they were known for this.

I think you may have misunderstood me, I wasn't suggesting that you feed your Oscar on feeders, this is something that we do not recommend at all. When I was trying to ascertain is whether or not the Oscars were used to eating live fish. If so, it could be a case of weaning them onto non-live food.

Ah. ok, do you know how long this process may take? I guess all fish are different.

keeping the water in good shape will make them hungry later...
as OFL had said, perhaps, they used to have a certain kind of foods..
a healthy fish could refuse foods for a week or two... just try to throw-in
some pellets and remove if not taken... sooner, they will eat when hungry.

I would advise in order to don't polute the water and make you clean after feeding that you stop offering food for 2 or 3 days. Then you try again.

Sounds good. I'll hold off and give it a go again later. Thanks.
