I'm sure Noddy would have something to say, but you could look into a gar fish, Florida and spotted tend to stay on the smaller side, around the 24" mark.

But you could still do a silver or black aro in a 6x2, I don't want to definitively say no because there's not really a hard and fast rule. You just have to remember that full grown, you're looking at a fish that will be 1/2 the length of your tank.

Well, I've had my medium sized aro for about 7 months or so. He was 4 inches when I got him and he's probably close to 18 or 20 now. They do grow fast up to a point, but it does slow down once they're bigger.

Yep, they stay really thin while they're gaining length.

Well, all you can do is try, but be prepared that you may at some point find yourself trying to rehome a leviathan :P

Silver Arowana: Cheap(in the US at least), docile, fairly hardy, and easy to find. Sounds good right? Not really, for one they reach a size that rivals that of a captive Ariapima. But thats why we love arowanas right? So whats really wrong with them? The fact that the majority offered for sale are captive bread thus creating an abundance of defects and disorders. Do not let this deter you from purchasing a silver Arowana as most of the defects tend to fall into the category of drop eye, which is discussed later.

You know that they don't really rival in size. Arapaimas are 15 feet and 500 pounds while Arowanas are 4 feet long.
