DMD123 created the topic: All quiet in the bichir section, lol

This has to be the slowest part of our forum.... :silly:

So I guess I will step up and admit I own two bichir. One is a WC weeksii named Nessie (after the Loch Ness monster) and the other is a 9" Delhezi named Darwin because it just looks like something ready to crawl out of the water. They both currently reside in my 210g community tank with my larger peaceful cichlids.

Im sure you guys have seen them posted in other spots on the site but just trying to get a little movement going on in this section.
Darwin:

Nessie:

I really need to take some time with pictures and capture a good one of Nessie the weeksii. They are called a 'fathead' bichir and they almost look like they have no 'neck' and a giant head. It actually is very comical.

Anyone else want to step up and share their bichir go ahead and add to this.

The weeksii is the real potential monster, she is 12" long and getting THICK. I have seen a pic on MFK with one getting to be like 22" and I believe about the diameter of a baseball bat. I guess average is more at 18". The Delhezi is about 9" and just seems to have stopped growing. They can get up to 12" and are one of the more active outgoing of the bichirs.

There is some debate as to whether these can be safely kept with pleco and Im not sure how to answer. Pleco can develop a taste for the slime coat and will literally suck on the bichir and 'hicky' them to death. Mine would attack the weeksii but more out of territorial issues. Then one morning I came in to the pleco missing half of a side fin. Never knew what happened but it completely stays away form the bichir now.

I went hog wild when I first got into bichir and I had five of them, A regular Senegal, albino Senegal, gold dust, weeksii, delhezi. I slowly figured out which ones I liked the best and kept them.
