benmcfadden created the topic: Going Discus / Planted

Im thinking about a change around in my big tank.

Empty it out and plant it with live plants and keep discus and maybe a shoal of Clown Loaches because I love seeing them once they get bigger all scurring around.

Could of questions i would like opinions on.

1 - Could you keep a fire eel with Discus
2 - Could you keep a ghost knife fish with Discus
3 - Stocking, how many discus and Clown Loaches ?

Haku, I knew your were good.

Most Discus experts recommend that you keep Discus w/ Discus; they really are quite timid for cichlids, & are quite susceptible to disease & parasites. The only thing I kept w/ Discus when I kept was Cardinal tetras, Rummynose tetras, & a few cory cats; I did have Clown Loaches w/ them, but had to remove as the CL's are aggressive feeders, & the Discus didn't get a fair shot @ the food. As Discus are not an inexpensive fish, I don't recommend keeping them w/ other species that could out-compete them for food.

I did review the 2 videos you posted; the 1st one is a good stocking level; Discus get to be the size of a large dinner plate. The 2nd one looks like a tank you would see in a pet shop & these specimens were for sale: WWWAAAAYYYY overcrowded. My personal opinion on this one is that he's got too much disposable income & is begging for disaster; one of those fish gets sick in a tank that densely populated, they will all probably get it. (I counted 26 Discus divided by 240gl = a little over 9gl per Discus, & I didn't include the Angels & barbs & whatever else is in that tank.) He should have maybe 8 Discus in that tank, & not much else.

Good call, I might think about the CL and swap for some corys, Ive also got a couple of nice small Plecs (royal / gold) some people say these cant be kept with discus too, im not sure. People say they can latch onto the side of the fish and bite them

The only pleco I ever saw do the "latching" thing was the Gibbiceps I have now; my Dovii was picking on him, & I guess he got fed up w/ it; he whacked him w/ his tail & then "bit" him; the Dovii really doesn't mess w/ him anymore.

I have heard of Royals doing this, but have not personally witnessed. FYI, mine lives in a tank w/ a Jaguar cichlid, & the Jag doesn't mess w/ him. "Panaques" (royals, blue-eyes,etc) are known for being a might territorial.

I would stick to Cory cats. Plec*s are dirty and some can feed on slime of other fish.!with fish like discus you want s little stressors as possible as they tend not to be as hardy as other cichlids.

I have no idea why the water bill is so high
