That poor little thing :( is that reddish patch just above her pelvic fins a trick of the light, part of her normal colouration or an ulcer of some sort? I'd definitely start on the epsom salt straight away - that looks like bloat to me.

Re: egg binding though, I know that in birds it can be caused by a calcium or vitamin D deficiency, but I think in fish it can occur when, for whatever reason, the eggs don't get reabsorbed back into the female's body and they rot, leading to a bacterial infection. I'm definitely not 100% certain on that though.

Just the light, she has no red patches. I asked my Mom to go check her for me and she's still just floating around listless. I'll do the ES as soon as I get home. :-( Poor thing I feel awful for her.

Well I'm home and she's double the size. About to do a WC and get the ES added.

Good luck Jen.. in case you weren't aware.. dose the tank over a 48hr period, not all at once.

Ok, so sorry to post so much. Yes, I dosed all at once and now I'm freaking out that they are going to all die because of it. She DID eat when I put some flakes in there, and she ate a lot. She's out swimming around but HUGE. . .

Also, here's a pic of the water BEFORE the WC. As you can see the ammonia is 0, Nitrite 0, and nitrate 5. I guess my question is, why do a water change when the numbers are perfect?

EEEK.. keep a very close eye Jen. You salt over an extended period to allow the fish to regulate. I would really do a 75% change and bring the EP level back up slowly.

I think it's a combo of a few things, but as far as I know it's all about reducing the stress on a sick fish. The lower the nitrate the better, and it will also dilute any possible pathogen that might be present in the water that wouldn't be picked up by the water tests, etc. It'd also replenish minerals that they take up from the water, making osmoregulation a bit easier for them I guess.

I think as well the increased water movement can promote slime coat growth, but that isn't really applicable in your case.
