jnet created the topic: LFS finally have gar :)

Ok so my local fishy shop finally has some baby gars back in; they were really nice but I am worried now will they eat my rainbows?

I know I should have same concern for my GG right? I think the rainbows will be ok but I really dont want them eaten.

Anyway they were £40 which is normal price Ive seen, should I shouldnt I?

They had 7 so I thought I have time to think about it no one is going to buy then that quick.

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)

PB is so darn slow again, but this is my Gar as a baby, the first time he ate a feeder from the bottom of the tank.
I thought    he's gonna choke, now i did it...
But if you watch the whole vid, you see what happened.

And these size fish are NOT safe from a Gar. It depends if the fish have a prolongued body too.

This was a barb, wrong shape, but still got killed .

Slender, prolongued bodoed fish do pose more of a risk, and if you are fond of them, they should be taken out of the tank.
For an adult 2-3"slender fish are no problem for the Gar to swallow, for they can "unlock" their lower jaw to be able to swallow prey, that are actually too big...

But You gotto remember that Gars are piscivores, they eat fish!
And they are very good at waiting for their prey, mine was waiting for many, many weeks until he finally took the barb...
How big are the ones you can get?
Any idea of their age?
40 $ is about the same as 25 euros i payed for my baby.
Adults, or Gar over 12" are sold for far more money, 100 $ is not unusual...

BTW Gars do only hunt when hungry, but they do kill fish, when they "Think" they can handle them.
But i say go for it, and rehome the small fish, or deal with the idea, that it's the fishes nature to eat fish...and lose a few.

btw that's not to sound harsh, but i have some copper salmon in my Catfish tank, and once the cats get bigger, i know they will be catfish-food.

anything bigger than 2" and with a height of 1,5" should be safe with the gar....
but don't blame me if it doesn't work.
But my SD's and all ather bigger fish are never bothered by the gar...

edit: is it only me and my computer, or are all the letters and words in all posts green today????

Edit 2: Can you get some pics of the Gars they are selling, you made me so curious!
Just sneak in your cam or phone and take pics without a flash!
I never had any problems with taking pics at the lfs's.

Plus it would be good to see if there's a particular fish that you like best.
If there is, go back every other day, and see if you recognize him.
And if you have fallen in love, make them put up a sign, that the fish is sold!!!

saw a white spotted florida gar in petland over the weekend - wanted to buy it ... but knowing i don't have the tank size ... passed on it - it was going for $25.
i would say it's about 3-4 inches. :(

White Spotted????
And i guess you didn't take a picture of it?
What did it look like, for i know Gars can and will adjust their colour and pattern to the substrate and surroundings, but a white one...that is odd.

And for that prize...i wouldt have bought it for sure.
And at that size, you'd have quite a bit of time to let it grow out, that is not in an Oscartank, 4-5"may be considered snacktime.
I can do with another one in my tank...

no i didn't take a pic .. didn't thought about it.

it was gravel substrate in a i would say 20 gal - with other fish. The body was white and black spots on the tail area .. some under the paddle fins. But most of the bodies white.

i have a 3-4 inch oscar + JD in a 55 gal right now. waiting for a 120+ deal to happen .. hopefully soon. Still don't want to risk buying a gar and not having the room.

Smart move, you'd be looking at an upgrade for sure! :)
But the way you describe it, makes it allmast sound like they got Cuban Gars...
But they are so rare that 25$ wouldt be silly.

But that would mean a MAJOR upgrade, for they can reach 3 feet in lenght...
But still my favorite, maybe one day...

hopefully...but my O's not doing so well .. been on the bottom of the tank for a day now .. this happened after a WC ... i don't see any sign of distress from the other fishes and the water condition is perfect. i'm hoping he can make it through today .. i'm at work, going to find out when i get home tonight.
