Ladybug created the topic: but HOW!!?!

I'm not really sure where to ask this question...
My family has a 150 gallon acrylic tank that has been sitting in our living room for years. Nobody every really pays attention to it, every few weeks someone might feed the fish and turn on the lights. I am still new to the fish stuff but I just recently tested the water and the nitrates and nitrites are 0, along with the ammonia, and the water is pretty clear. the last time any of the water was changed was months ago, if not years. HOW!?!?!?!?!

What are you using for tests? What is the filtration and what are the fish?

I'm using the 5 in 1 test strips and a liquid ammonia test, and I tested it twice just to be sure.
3 black neon tetras
4 black skirt tetras
1 7" feather fin catfish
1 sunshine cichlid
1 electric yellow cichlid
2 black fin sharks
1 little blue cichlid (I'm not sure what it is)
3 or 4 little plecos.

the filter looks like a giant overflow box along the back of the tank, I'm not sure what it is.
all of the fish have been in there for at least two months, some longer.

Test strips are junk, very inaccurate. API master kit, all liquid tests are the way to go. Quite the variety of fish and some not compatible I think. The water surely needs to be changed, several times and soon. Having read your intro post, I presume you are better equipped to care for your new baby O?

yeah, Ive spent well over 100$ for her before I even got her, and I just tested the other tank for kicks and giggles, thinking I could maybe convince my mom to let me put some Oscars in it in the future.
there are lots of different fish in there because one of our friends moved and needed somewhere to put there fish until after the move, but they never came to get them.

That's quite the mixture of fish, especially with the yellow cichlid, I presume to be a yellow lab. Sounds like you really need to fork out the $20 and get on drsfostersmith.com and get the API freshwater test kit. Welcome , and snap some pics

Thinking someone woke up and felt a bit like trolling today...
If not...since no one seems to even feel like feeding the fish but every couple of weeks they would be better off elsewhere.

well I have most of them posted on my local classifieds for someone to come get. I was taking a closer look at the filter and it looks like it works like a sump, but I'm no expert. the last couple weeks I have been feeding them and turning the lights on in the morning.

And if this is true , then by all means I applaud you for your effort.
I would assume that the water is in terrible condition , regardless of what those test strips say , and if at all possible please do try to change some of the water. Perhaps 25% a day for 3 to 4 days and then switching to 50% a day to slowly get them used to cleaner water. Once you get a good quality liquid test kit we can help a little better and set up a good water changing schedule if you wish to do so until the fish are rehomed. I know its a large tank , so its probably not very easy to do them. Do you have any equipment that would make it possible for you to perform larger water changes soon ?
And do you have a good quality water conditioner at hand ?
If you could post us a picture of that tank and the filter it would be of great help.
All you have to do is to upload the pics to photobucket and paste the IMG code in here.
