For your nitrate test be sure to shake the b'jesus out of bottle 3. A good 30 seconds. Unless your filters are nfg, you should show some nitrate reading

yeah it's not fully cycled. I'm assuming you shook bottle number 2 of the nitrate test for 30 seconds per the directions, and then waited 5 minutes for the results. You would be surprised how often people don't follow the instructions well.

The zinc particles clump up if the bottle is not shaken every week, so you should actually shake it for 1-2 minutes very hard (upside down, taping it against the counter, etc.), of course API doesn't tell you this on the instructions.

but with small fish in a big tank, you should be able to handle the cycling process without too much hassle. Just keep an eye on it, and be ready for large water changes if they become necessary.

If ammonia or nitrites start approaching 1ppm, 50% water change is called for.

well the tank has been established for well over a year, I just think I probably didn't shake the test enough. I have been obsessively checking the ammonia and nitrites and they look fine, I'll just have to shake the nitrate test like a madman.

We've all been there. Sounds like you're doing far better than me when I started :)

Thanks :3 I did a lot of research and am still doing research to make sure my fish are in the best environment I can possibly provide them. And since I don't have a social life to speak of and graduated highschool early, I have nothing else to do with my time.

well, if you're feeling like diving deeper into the crazy world us forum people occupy, join us some time in the 'attempt to go out again' thread in the off topic discussion. We chat, we do silly things, we post pictures of food, it's quite nice in there :)
