I've been looking into these for my 3rd tank in my new man cave. Any educated opinions on these? I'm looking for a nasty cichlid that'll fit in a 4ft tank. I've also been looking into festae's.

Pretty sure they're considered mini Dovii so that says a lot. As far as actual experience with them i have none. Would love to see you try them though for sure

Yeah that's how this got started. I want a dovii, but I don't want to deal with a tank that size. I want something pretty nasty for my last tank, but I want to keep it the tank at a manageable 4ft'er. Checking with Jeff Rapps, but I really don't know where to start looking for a mini at.

Wrong area, but I've also been looking into a buttekoferi.

Well for the Butti you'll need the 75 or 90 but the grammode will do fine in a 55

grammode takes forever to grow. You can keep a 3" in a 30g for a 5 or more years.

Red tiger motaguense would be fine in 55g, almost as mean as a grammode

Both cichlid of americas and cichlid connection carry both of them. There is a minimum order though. $100.

That Pet Place has it too under sieve cichlid (grammode) and Green Guapote - (Cichlasoma beani), which is another mean cichlid.

I thought it was a 1/2" per month, which I didn't think was all that bad. I can't find a lot of info on them other than the here and there subject. I know I'm spoiled with my Oscars growth rate so I don't have super high expectations. Anyway of sexing a mini dov at a smaller size?

Red tiger mota, Festae, and Beani is on the list to. I'll look it up, but whats the growth rate/opinions on these.

Butti prob out. The color is drab and it gets girthy. Definitely the nastiest tempered fish I've personally came across though.

No personal experience with the grammode, but my cousin put one in his tank with a big Oscar and JD and the next morning both were floating at the top of the tank. And the grammode was much smaller than the O and JD. Never did get to see it, but judging from that story if ur lookin for a nasty fish that sounds like a good choice! I know what ya mean about not finding much info on em too. After he told me about that i tried doin some research on them...didnt find much.

You could always go for the hybrids, if these are hard to find. A flowerhorn is pretty evil, and will live in a 55. Parrots (especially king kong parrots) are really mean (mostly) as well, and a 55 would suit one of these just fine.
