Cyanogattatus vs carpintis

I’m having a hard time trying to tell the difference at the my fav spot. I want a carpintis, but they have them mixed in the same tank. If I go by the worm like markings (spangley, zig zaggy whatever) under their eyes on the gill slits & the large irregular pearl markings will I be on point? Also sexing wise is the black mark a good indicator of a female or what else should I look out for. 1 st go around with this species.

Simple. Texas( H. Guttatus) have small "dots"

Carpintis (H. Carpintis) have much larger blue markings

I hate when LFS mark Carpintis as "Green Texas"....they are most decidedly NOT a Texas cichlid!!! :pinch:

And IMPO, Carpintis are a MUCH better looking cichlid......

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

Carpintis get along with others better and are just a bit smaller in general.

At 2" they're not so easy. Also getting a male vs female is a little shakey. just been eye balling a carpintis for awhile now & found they had some at one of my spots
