I just had to separate my breeding pair of Carpintis(experienced this with 2x breeding pair of Salvini). He beat her up pretty bad, and I need some help on how to proceed. I think she will make a full recovery, but how do you deal with a breeding pair that is not getting along? I really want to keep both of them. Once it goes bad does it stay that way, or do you just give the fish a time out?

i don't have any experience with Salvini but i have had bad time too with my pair of oscars...
my option is the standby separator that can be installed /removed anytime with ease...

I've never dealt with these kind of fish before but is the female considerably smaller than the male?? If so I've seen people maker dividers out of egg crate and make a hole in the center that the female will fit through but not the male that way she had a way to escape if he gets a little to rough

They will also breed right through the egg crate if there is no love dove. What size tank?

I had a pair of JD's like this. They bred a lot successfully but sometimes she wasn't ready to breed while he was. He tore her up bad a couple of times but then often things would be fine for a while afterwards. Just a common occurrence when breeding cichlids in confined spaces where the female has no chance of getting away if the male is really after her. It can sometimes be fatal for the female as well

Thanks for reply's, the tank is a 75 and I think I will get the divider ready over the next couple of days (male is in a different tank right now). The female seems to be doing well, she is eating and guarding the fry in the tank, but she looks pretty rough. Here is a picture.

Ouch! Poor little lady, one of my favorite fish, hope she recovers. Not to be critical by any means Rob, but whats with all the gunk on your filter intake? Looks like algae or moss?
