I know Texas cichlids are notorious for breeding outside their species.
I bought this guy a couple of weeks ago as a green texas.

since I got him/ her home... the colors have changed. the fish has gotten much darker, and has a lot of dark vertical bars. so i am guessing that it might be a cross between a texas and ???????
do yall think so too? and if so, any guesses as to what it might be crossed with?

A Convict?

Just kidding. I don't have a clue.

Good looking fish though.

Are hybrid fish sterile, like mules?

I agree w/ Metalhead...Festae X Texas. Green Texas is another "trade" name for Carpintis(& not one I like!!!)

thanks for the replies, I know that there is no way to know for sure... And I know that unless I spend the $$$$$ to get a fish shipped from a reliable source, it's always going to be a gamble. I caught a texas years ago in the guadalupe river a few hours south of me, and it didn't look anything like what I've seen in stores.

That fish you caught is a true Texas. They do naturally occur in S. Texas, so that shouldn't be too unusual. I am going down to FL next year(God willing) & we stay in Disney(Polynesian) & besides bass in that lake on their property, there are all kinds of cichlids in there too....I've never caught one, but I've seen people catch tilapia & Oscars.
