Chris-gashead created the topic: Thorichthys meeki

Hi guys.

Do male firemouths tolerate each other? I have a pair and they are hanging around together happily and hardly leave each other's side. I always thought males would not be happy together so Is it likely I have a male and a female pairing?

I would love to think so.

Both are about 2-3 inches in size but the fins are not developed enough to really tell, at least not to my eyes

Edit - Sorry, this should have gone in CA, not SA

EDIT: No problem, topic moved.

not sure but I think both female, my male had alot more colour and his dorsal thin went up to a point at the end your ones look like they are too rounded.

They recommend on alot of sites to have 1male to 3/4females but I had 3females and a male and they bullied each other to be alpha female with the male. So I ended with a pair, but then I had electric fault and my male sadly died.

trying to find a good vid of my pair.

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)

Firemouths are awesome. Yours are still a little young to tell. Males will have a brighter red in the throat area, longer extensions on the dorsal and anal fin. Usually. The problem with firemouths these days is that due to selective breeding/inbreeding and hormone/color injection its getting hard to tell the sexes apart. They are all starting to look like males. Ie.. Bright colors and long fins. Yours look a tad too young to tell but I'm sure in time they will brighten up. If your looking for a male and female you best get a few more and let the natural pairing happen.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

i love breeding colors. awesome fish - next round of fish (or tank) will most likely have firemouths in it.

2 firemouths should be able to tolerate each other. but anything can happen with cichlids. ive seen things that should work backfire instantly.... and ive also seen full grown oscars with tetras and gold fish.

im liking the loaches too.

Would you say this tank is too overstocked?

2x firemouth
2x keyhole cichlid
1x Bolivian ram
2x steel blue cichlid
4x yoyo loach
1x tiger plec
1x bristle nose plec
18x neon tetra
10x cardinal tetra
2x endler guppies

Currently everything is still young and small but am wondering if in the future I am likely to have problems?

Tank is 180 litres (48 US gallon)
Both firemouth are 2 inches in size, one keyhole is 2.5 inches the other is 3.5 inches, loaches are about 3 inches each and the rest are about an inches or so in size

I do at least 3 30% water changes a week currently

After the FM's kill or eat the gups and tetras, you are still overstocked. Also the FM's may be a bit much for the Keyholes. 2 plecs are also far too much for that tank. You have 45 fish in a tank that is overstocked with 2FM and 2 Keyhole. Really??

I may not be the Boss, but I'm ALWAYS right!
