Chris-gashead created the topic: JD pair with FM

Hey Guys,

Do you think a pair of JD's would be ok in a 55UK gallon tank (66US Gallon or 250 Litres) with a FM, Tiger Pleco and Bristlenose Pleco?

Just wondered if the aggression of JD's would be too much for a FM to handle? My FM is an aggressive little bugger anyway but doesn't really do anything any damage like a JD can do. The FM is only 3 inches in size though currently

Thanks,
Chris

If the JD's are breeding they might get a little feisty , always something to be aware of.

Haku, I knew your were good.

I heard they are not fond of Plec's in general either, is this true?

My JD's have no issues with any plecs, but your tank would be overstocked with 3 cichlids and 2 plecs. Splitting 5 fish into 65 gallons is 13 gals a fish. Not a good environment.

The tank is too small for that stocking which will increase the chances of the firemouth getting hurt. Firemouths tend to be all bark but not much bite against other cichlids. They will flare and act tough but when they start to get bullied they will get bullied hard and fast.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

A tank of that size is not big enough for 2 JD's.......if you want a pair of JD's, I would say no less than a 90GL tank. JD's can get up around 12", & as stated, if they breed, LOOK OUT.

Here's a video I found of a nice pairof JD's so you can get an idea of how robust they can get:

A breeding pair of JD's protect a territory of at least 4x4 when eggs are laid.

I will re-house the FM as soon as I start to see aggression from the JD’s. I will probably add the Tiger Pleco with the FM as well so it will most likely end as 1 Bristle Nose Plec, and 2 JD’s. I just wanted to know if JD's will be ok with a FM and Pleco's whilst they are still young, and probably up to about 4-5 inches.

There are currently five JD’s in the aquarium in the hope that they pair up. What size do they usually need to be before we can sex them? What can I use to accurately judge a male and female apart? I believe some of the markings on their face are a good way to tell them apart, right?

"I just wanted to know if JD's will be ok with a FM "

Cichlid compatability can never be guaranteed.

Shoot me a decent length video & I will sex them for you. JD's are very easy to sex. Males have more & much brighter color (blue scales) in the body, females less so, & females usually have more color in the "cheek" region, but not always.....sometimes you get what I term a "super male", that has really spectacular coloring in both the body & gill pates. Males also get longer & more pointed dorsal & anal fins as they age.

For JD's under the the age of 1 year, the spangling on the face is your best bet of telling them apart. Females will choose the right male, so keep the 5 until a pair forms.
