Curious to know how large your jags are. Overall what do you think the average size of captive jags are? Thanks....

Mine is 2yrs old and a solid 12, possibly 13ins. Proper care, meaning tankspace, clean water and good diet will dictate size. Mine is in a 125g alone and this fall will move into a 180, alone. I expect him to attain 16+ins. He eats Massivore as a staple, with various good treats. Twice weekly 75% water changes, not because water quality fades that fast, because thats how you grow large cichlids.

A healthy male should get there, female fair bit smaller, possibly 10 or a bit better.

Male should reach that size in about 4 years or so

Is there a way to tell the gender when they are only at a couple inches in size?

At 4 inches your chances are greater at determining the sex. At 2", it is a toss up. The larger ones could be males or they could be aggressively feeding females. The best bet is to get 6 and grow them out for 3-6 months or get 3 and keep them separated.

If you are the type that likes to wipe down your aquarium or rearrange your tank, then a 8"+ jag will bite hard and draw blood when you put anything in the tank.

If you can look @ a tankful of the same age from the same batch, males will always be bigger than females. Parachromis are sexually size dimorphic, with males growing almost 2X as big in some species (P.Dovii comes to mind).

I've been fairly successful sexing baby/juvie Parachromis, so if you have a pic of one you are looking to get, post it & I will see what I can do.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

so a 180 is what you would recommend for a single male jag ? what would you recommend for a single female ?

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next
