Mating behavior? 4 Months, 4 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I recently put in a female with my male African Cichlid along with a better hiding place/ornament. Since then, the male cichlid go inside the ornament and navigates his way to the darkest part of it. I always hear rustling when he goes there and he occasionally comes out of that area with a piece of gravel in his mouth as if he is moving the gravel from that spot.

Is this typical behavior of a male cichlid that's trying to mate?

New to Oscars, only had them since about summer of \\\'07. Finally got my own Jan, \\\'08 after my b-day. His name is Ghost and he is still a baby. Plan to get a larger tank when he gets older and I have the funding for it.

It could be the fact that they are to start laying eggs. They will certainly scooped substrate in their mouths and move it, however, from my experience, that doesn't always mean they're going to lay eggs straight away
