Feeding Afr. Cichlid Veggies 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I've read on several forums and fish information sites that most African Cichlids enjoy the occasional lettace leaves or peas. Does anyone know of any good ways to get the veggies to sink to the floor or at least drift mid-tank level?

Also, does anyone know if these cichlids enjoy the cheaper and easier common lawn grass as their vegetable food?

New to Oscars, only had them since about summer of \\\'07. Finally got my own Jan, \\\'08 after my b-day. His name is Ghost and he is still a baby. Plan to get a larger tank when he gets older and I have the funding for it.

Hm never tried grass yet, lol, would think grass is for sheep and cows But might be worth a try if you can be sure whatever you bring from outside isn't contaminated with herbizides, pestizides or fertilizer. Dandelion leaves I meant to try somewhen but forgot.

For feeding veggies, you could as well make your own fish food by blending peas, spinach, bit of paprika and whatever together, add some gelatine with a little bit of water, put that on a tray in a layer and freeze. You can then break off pieces when you need it, that stuff sinks (but can make a mess as well in the tank, especially if you used too much water). It should be thawed first though.
I've no clue about African cichlids but some of them should really have a vegetable based food mainly - with too much of protein as in meaty food they can get bloat and die. Is only for some species though I think, no real idea.

Yeah these africans can get bloat from a too meaty diet- They live mostly on cichlid flakes and goldfish flakes because they are cheap and the least fat/meat food available at my supplier. I'll try to make some of that veggie/gelatin frozen food, but it may take a while- I am horrible at making food . Thank you for the idea

Oh, don't worry, according to my kids I am, too
Dunno where you are, but here there are lots of processed foods available for African cichlids, based on greens. Then again, the Oscar would probably gulp down most of it here, so I find it a bit difficult to feed fish with different food requirements in the same tank.
