Fish often strangely. Certainly doesn't mean there's anything wrong with him. I think you would need to observe him for a few more days to see if anything is wrong. What kind of fish is it? Whenever fish start acting different to what they normally do, you must carry out a water tank straight away. Ammonia, nitrite nitrate and pH. This can often be the cause of problems with fish. Like I said, if this behaviour is only today, observe the fish for the next couple of days and see what happens.

Unfortunately, I'm not really that experience with African Cichlid. However, I know that some lakes have a very high pH. You have only given us your pH. We need to know ammonia nitrite. The biggest drawback with having a high pH is if you have an ammonia problem. Ammonia is a lot more toxic if your pH is high. If your pH is very low, the toxicity is not as lethal. So you really do need to know the ammonia and nitrite. Like I said before, one day isn't really a very long time, you normally monitor fish for more than that before alarm bells start ringing, unless there are absolute obvious signs of course.

I'm not an expert, but I found that the Jewels are very shy - they tend to look for a hide-away as a way of life, make sure they have enough of that. I've got 2 couples and they even hide-away their eggs - I only see that something has happened once the tanks are full of little ones
