BullHeads and bowfin 1 Year, 1 Month ago
My neighbor came over this mourning to tell me he caught a bunch of young bullheads and bowfin. So, I went over to his house, and he showed me what he had. There was about 50 one inch bulllheads, twenty 1 to 2 inch bowfins, a pair of small sunfish, and three tiny sticklebacks crammed into his tiny 5 gallon tank. He gave me two bullheads, and a bowfin. So, I put them in my empty 10 gallon tank, and now the reside happily.

Native fish(to the US, you guys in england probably some different stuff..) are actually pretty cool. My baby bullheads are very active, and although small, their spines can cut my skin. The bowfin doesn't move much, just hovers in the water, really. I must say, they are really cool fish and think more people should keep them. They're a lot easier to keep than tropicals(I know, I've only had them for a day, but I've kept others for longer periods of time including sunfish and perch). They don't require heaters, maintainance in less(for one they don't even mind dirty water, their water is a lot more contaminated than oscar's water.

Very personable fish. But ceratinly not a replacement for oscars

Yes, we have a fish called a bullhead here in some of our rivers. However, they are only small fish that tend to live under rocks. Anglers catch them every now and then when using very small hooks.

Well, you've got COMPLETELY different bullheads than ours. Bullheads here get bigger than oscars! Their wiskers are modified as spines, and an adult can cut open your hand. That picture you showed me looks kinda like a goby of some sort, completely unre-lated. I've kept gobies, nothin' cool there.

I love bullheads. I've got a few (maybe 30) very young ones living in a stock tank out in a realatives yard. My uncle nets them out of the pond at the cemetary he works for. Bullheads could get bigger than O's I guess but not around here. (Eastern Iowa) If you caught one that was over a foot then someone ought to give you a Trophy!

Sunfish and Perch have a lot in common with O's. They call them all "Perciforms". (Perch-like) I don't know what makes the perch so darn special though. They should be called Oscaforms!

The Perciformes are a family much like Cichlidae(where oscars belong...). In my opinionn, not as cool and personable as oscars. Bullheads are catfish though. Speaking of perciformes, I used to have a perch. His name was um... wel, um it was perch. Pretty boring fish. I shoulda ate him.

My neighbor has caught a 14 inch bullhead on a minnow.

Not so tiny, are they???
