I have a one year old oscar (6-8inch)in a small tank (small aqua one copy) and i have just bought a new large tank 90cm long x 50 wide and 70 high. I am very worried that my oscar will not take the move very well and i would like to know if there is anything to ease this process or to make sure oscar does not stress. Also what is the best way to move him from one tank to another?

This is ergent so a quick reply would be wonderful.
It is 7.40pm here in Brisbane Australia and i am hoping to move him within the next 12 or so hours.

Moving an Oscar from one tank to another is a doddle. You often hear people talking about using large towels that they put in the tank to catch the Oscar. Forget that, that is far from the best way of doing it. All you need is a large net, a large bucket, and a small hand towel that is big enough to wrap the fish in. Doing this with confidence will make the job a lot easier. Catch the fish in the net, straight into the bucket that has a little bit of water in it, it might be easier if you actually have the hand towel in the bucket already, wrap the whole fish up. And then all you do is lift the fish still wrapped in a towel and put it in your tank and just let the fish swim out of the towel. Okay, you might get a few drops of water when you take it out of the back it but it's certainly a lot easier than trying to catch the fish using a towel and not the net

You will also need to move your filter over on to the new tank even if you have new filters for it otherwise you will have an uncycled tank

the new tank we are putting oscar in is a second hand tank and the filter has been running for the last two years.

For a filter to have good bacteria in it there needs to be a source of ammonia. This means fish (which produce ammonia). So as long as the new tank has had fish in it up to a few hours before you add your oscar everything will be ok (assuming the fish in it are producing similar amounts of waste to you oscar, and they need to be removed when the oscar is added). If it has been run with no fish in it for 24 hours then it will have minimal good bacteria in it and it will need to be cycled.


If in doubt run the filter from the old tank and the new one together for 2 or 3 months
