I bred convicts a while ago. Simply buy a male and a female and just add water. You can tell the difference from their colours. The water round my way is hard which is what convicts love. A bloke in a LFS told me once that no shop buys convicts from their wholesalers round here as people are always bringing them in. I gave 8 to a friend to cycle his new tank and in no time he had 4 small but breeding pairs. Honestly they are like rabbits. I had a small tank and while waiting for the babies to get big enough to trade in the LFS i was having to get rid of new sets of eggs every 10 days or so. I got a trade in value of roughly 50p per 1inch fish. I had 75 surviving babies from the 1st batch and the parents were only about 3 or 4 inches. I traded the parents with the last lot of babies as i couldnt be bothered to breed them anymore

Breed like rabbits.
I know where you are coming from im stuck with my guppies that are just as bad,on a daily basis i see a s*^?t load of babies that were not there the previous day.
as my oscars are still juvies they wont be able to keep up and unfortunatly guppies has no trade value here in the LFS.
ill have to split all the males and females soon so i can put some brakes to their mating habbits.
