Thinking of going into marine 1 Year ago Karma: 0
I have a spare Juwel 300 litre tank which was used for marine by the original owner.
I want to try my hand at marine but i am getting very confused. You go on one site they tell you one thing, you go on another site they tell you another thing.
To start with i just wish to keep fish. I just wanted to know what basic equipment would be required and how to set it up, ie depth of substrate (Crushed Coral), How much live rock to start the tank going, could i add more as i go along, and what to put into the Juwel internal filter.
The equipment i have at present is as follows;

Juwel 300 Litre Tank
300 Watt Heater
V2 Skim 400 Protein Skimmer
(In process of buying Crushed Coral, If this is the best thing to buy?)

I wouldn't use cruched coral as a substrate personally- but that's me. You can get as much or as little live rock as you need, suite yourself. As for the kind, I do fiji. I'm not too familiar with litirs(being American), so I can't give too many specifics. You can ceratinly add more live rock too, the more, the merrier. You'll need a pump, a heater, an aerator, filters, basicly what you'll need for an oscar tank- but a little more. Get some salt(you can't really call it a saltwater aquarium without salt), but not normal salt used for eating. Get instant ocean salt wich can be purchased at your local lfs.

Good Luck, Artemis

A friend of mine told me his marine tank is quite easy to keep. He never needs to put his hands in the tank and only small volume water changes once a month. He said you have to test to make sure of salinity etc but thats it. Very expensive to set up tho!
