the list for tankmates is a long one indeed.some people have success with one type of tankmate while others will have problems with the same type of tankmate.i think it comes down to trial and error and the personality of your oscar. unfortunetly it is a hit or miss endeavor and no one can really predict the outcome. the only real thing to keep in mind is that if an oscar can fit a tankmate into his mouth he probably will, at some point, try.

Fish are not like some mammals or birds that pine if they lose their mate. They also do perfectly okay on their own. tankmates. As for what tankmates, well, there are loads to choose from. Personally, I in keeping fish that from the same part of the world as the Oscar a very good idea

you could really put in anything that the oscar wont eat, and that isnt too agressive for him. stay away from jack dempseys, red devils, green terrors and other fish of that sort (even though ive had a terror who was a wonderful tankmate to my os)
some fish that doh very good with are os are pictus catfish- they dont get too big and they have spikes so the o wont eat them and they do an excellent job of cleaning the tank.
lepordinous-best tankmate ive seen yet. i currently have 1 with my os. they seem to be growing at the same rate and are very interesting to watch
other fish to look at are eartheaters, firemouths, convicts, chocolate, severums, you could even do something like large schooling fish like tinfoils or silver dollars. pike chichlid is another very good one. i had 1 when i had os with the terror and he fit right in with the o's always beggin for food.
ive been wanting to get an electric blue jack dempsey. they are very colorfull and appealing, and supposivly much less aggressive. but they are expensive....very.. so ive been hesitant to get one. it would kill me if i spent that much on a fish and it didn't live, or to kill the rest of my tank.
im not sure what ''colorfull chichild in stores'' your talking about jack dempsey maybe? a name or pic would help. jacks get aggressive. its a possible match that worked once for me but failed the other, so i wouldnt recommend it let us know what ya add in!!

If you get a tankmate you will need to stop the problem of your oscar hogging all the food. There are many ways to do this, put food in at both ends of the tank at the same time, put food that is small( like bloodworm) so the less dominate fish can get some or try using sinking pellets

what kind of pleco have you got? Even though your tank is probably big enough for an Oscar and a couple of small and tankmates, if you have got one of the big pleco is, it certainly isn't big enough for any more fish.
However, to answer your question regarding where you can buy a pumpkinseed, I have no idea because I live in the UK. However, if you live anywhere near the great Lakes, you can catch them from the shore, so get yourself a fishing rod and go and get one for free

the pumpkin seed is native to north america and lives in lakes from new brunswick to north carolina. they typically grow to abut 8" but can reach up to 16" they live in water that ranges in temp from 4-70 degrees farenheit and i belive they're cold water fish so i think they will have a hard time on a heated oscar tank. for your 72 gal tank maybe you can try a couple of female convicts or a med size pleco (6-8 range).

now you are confusing me, you say you have got a 20 gallon that trickle filter, do you mean a sump filter? I can't understand why anyone would set up that kind of, you would be better off having a 200 gallons and with a 72 gallon trickle filter.
Anyway, regarding stingrays, I would forget the idea if I was you, stingrays are for the specialist fish keeper. they often require just sand in their tank as ornaments and rock can cause injury.
