hi everyone its been a long time since i posted because my oscar died suddenly a few months ago ( totally out the blue )but life goes on and i recently got hold of a little red oscar.
this fish looks tiny in a 60 gallon tank so i thought while he is small i could try and introduce a couple of fish and maybe they could grow up together without to much hassle.i decided on a clown loach and purchased one i knew would be too big for the oscar to consume, or so i thought as my wife alerted me to one of the strangest sights i have ever seen. the oscar had attempted to scoff the clown loach head first and after realising he cant dislodge his jaw like a snake couldnt release the loach because the loach had used its defence mechanism and shot his barbs through either side of the oscars mouth.the two fish were now stuck together and both short of oxygen and after what seemed like a life time i alerted my fisherman neighbour who skillfully seperated the fish with some tweezers and skill of hand at the cost of the loachs life.the oscar seems fine but i thought i would let you all know what greedy gits oscars are.has anyone seen this before.

Yes, I've heard of this happening on two occasions. In fact, I give advice about this exact situation and what you can do if it does happen somewhere on the website. It normally happens with catfish, some of the smaller catfish have spikes in their side fins which get stuck in the Oscars mouth.

I better just add that clown Loach are better off in groups, rather than one on its own, they like being with their own sort, keeping one on its own could be very stressful for it. Also, they are very slow growing fish, barely an inch year I would say so if you ever buy clown Loach for an Oscar tank, it's best to try get them so the Oscar won't eat them
